Crossref turns 25!

For 25 years, the Crossref community has worked together to make=20
research more connected, transparent, and accessible. Since our=20
registration on the 18th January, 2000, Crossref has grown into a=20
global, community-driven organization with over 21,000 members across=20
159 countries. This anniversary celebrates our growing and diverse=20
community; it&rsquo;s not just about where we&rsquo;ve been, but where=20
we&rsquo;re going. With new initiatives like API Metadata Sprints and=20
the Crossref Metadata Awards, we&rsquo;re deepening our commitment to=20
inclusivity, innovation, and community-led progress. Join us as we=20
celebrate our shared achievements and shape the future of open scholarly=20
infrastructure&mdash;together.

On Wednesday, May 7 , we will honour the contributions of our members=20
with the inaugural Crossref Metadata Awards . The awards, which=20
recognise metadata excellence and enrichment, are part of our ongoing=20
commitment to enable the co-creation of the Research Nexus, our=20
community's vision of an open, interconnected network of relationships=20
that makes research objects easier to find, cite, link, assess, and=20
reuse.

Retracton Watch data now in the Crossref API

Retraction Watch retractions are now part of the Crossref REST API,=20
which makes accessing data on retracted research easier. This is the=20
first time Crossref has added third-party data to its API, improving=20
transparency in research. Retraction Watch collects and checks=20
retraction data from sources like PubMed and publishers, sharing updates=20
in CSV format. Users can now see Retraction Watch entries alongside=20
Crossref member retractions. This partnership aims to make retraction=20
information widely available and support research integrity.

Reflecting on 2nd year of our GEM program

The Global Equitable Membership (GEM) Program continues to grow, making=20
Crossref membership more accessible in the least economically advantaged=20
countries. In 2024, 127 new organizations joined, bringing the total to=20
458 members across 36 countries. We welcomed our first members from=20
Sierra Leone and Honduras and our first Sponsor in Bangladesh. Next, we=20
look forward to an in-person event in Accra, Ghana, to connect with our=20
growing community .

Using ROR IDs for funders

We now support using Research Organization Registry (ROR) IDs for funder=20
m etadata . This helps streamline workflows by using a single open=20
identifier for researcher affiliations and funding organizations. While=20
Funder IDs remain available, ROR IDs offer a persistent,=20
community-maintained identifier. Members can now deposit ROR IDs where=20
they previously used Funder IDs, and this metadata is available via our=20
API .
