The myth of perfect metadata matching

Metadata matching can&rsquo;t be perfect because data is often messy,=20
incomplete, or inconsistent. Adjusting the matching strategy for=20
specific cases&mdash;like fixing an error for one particular=20
input&mdash;doesn&rsquo;t always improve overall performance and can=20
sometimes introduce new problems, like incorrect matches. The process=20
requires balancing the levels of false negatives and false positives=20
when making adjustments. While large-scale automated matching=20
isn&rsquo;t flawless, it can greatly improve data completeness whenever=20
manual enrichment is impractical. The quality of relationships asserted=20
by automated matching processes should always be rigorously measured and=20
estimated using scientific methods.
